Farnham House - Once THE place to stay when visiting Lewiston

At the end of August, every year, it's time for students at Bates College to return to school. Finding a room in Lewiston at this time of year is like the proverbial "needle in a haystack" analogy. After a number of phone calls to assorted accomodations, and "sorry, no vacancy" repeated several times (knowing full well that I had no intention of staying at some motel with a colored roof), a kind soul suggested the Farnham House, unfortunately now closed.

I was to become forever be grateful. Barbara Fournier and her husband Ray were absolutely fantastic. She had one room left, which she apologized for (why I'll never know), and I took it. I came and went as I pleased, slept incredibly well, and was even given a "bagged breakfast" for my early Sunday morning departure to Quebec. No, this is not an advertisement and no, I'm not getting paid to put this here, it was simply a great place with great hosts The Farnham House should have been at the top of of any travelers list. Of the five places I stayed while traveling during my 2000 adventure, two stand out. You will find the second (Au Toit Bleu) on the Île d'Orleans page.

As an aside I have no evidence that Barbara and her husband are related..but .the name "Fournier" is certainly in the Lachance line. Go back far enough, and certainly there must be a connection. Following is a bit of story of this wonderful place.

Borrowed from an unknown website, some of the rooms at the Farnham House
The Farnham House - in all it's Victorian Charm
Built in the 19th Century, the Farnham house is located about a mile (you can walk) from the downtown business area. From 1982 until it closed guests enjoyed this beautiful, spacious (comfortable) Victorian home. A full breakfast was offered, individually prepared and served in the breakfast room, the dining room or, (my favorite) on the screened back porch. They would even prepare a complimentary breakfast for a guest of yours, not staying at the inn. This was really GREAT!
Prominent people who stayed there include the late Senator Edmund Muskie, Jesse Jackson, and cello maestro Mstislov Rostropovich.

Thanks Barbara & Ray - you really made it great - your B&B may be closed, but it is not forgotten!
