Dr. G. Quadir Khan, M.D. delivers as promised! | Dateline February 14, - St. Valentines Day, 2001
Feb 14 7:15 pm
After just arriving home from a trip to Orlando that started at 4:30 am
Troy called. His words were ("I think it's time"). At 11:45 pm,
following a battery of exams, tests and checks, this little trek to the
hospital proved to be a (False Alarm!)
Feb 15 6:15 am
My deep sleep and pleasant dreams of those closest to me were interrupted
by the phone ringing. It was Troy again, this time with a bit less reserved
tone as he says ("We're going back to the hospital." ) ... Troy has
never been one to mince words! I showered and shaved, and dressed (I wanted
to make sure I looked my best for the arrival) and left for the hospital.

Feb 15 9:30 am
Noah, it seems, does not want to cooperate. Already late (could this be
a sign), Dr. Khan was called about 10:00 am. We were all there, Dawn (of
course) Troy, Dawn's mom Marti and Step dad David, Joshua (Noah's ½
brother) me (Great Uncle Larry) and of course the entire entourage of hospital
staff and aides. We mulled around Suite #9 on the 3rd floor, in the Maternity
wing of Memorial Hospital looking for things to do, watching strange documentaries
about "the rights of beauty in different cultures" on the Discovery Channel.
Rather bizarre I might add...the show I mean, not the mulling around.
Lisa Eastburn, the attending RN, has done a great job all day, keeping Dawn comfortable, tracking progress and charts and generally keeping an eye on things. Dr. Khan would arrive around lunchtime to "see what to do".
Feb 15 1:00 pm Dr. Khan arrives. He investigates, breaks water, and announces he will return this afternoon to see how things are going. Privately he comments ("I wouldn't be surprised if we have a baby this afternoon".)
Feb 15 3:00 pm
As an aside, it's a beautiful day in Jacksonville. Just a few clouds in
an otherwise clear, bright blue sky. There is almost no humidity and the
temperature has reached about 78°.
Feb 15 3:20 pm
Dawn is a bit on the "itchy/impatient" side. She comments, ("My ribs are
extremely sore").
Feb 15 4:27 pm
A bit more than an hour has passed; we've all been in and out of the room
several times. Dawn has taken a couple of "power naps" - how she did it
is beyond me, the drugs must have been good!. After a bit of nausea and
a 10-minute nap (this would be the last nap for a while), Lisa looked
at the tape from the heart monitor and said ("It looks like it could be
soon").
Dr. Khan walked in about the same time. He took a quick look, said "the
head is down" and then told Dawn ("with every contraction I want you
to push").
Dawn of course, said ("starting now??") And so it begins.....
About Dr. Khan... Hailing from Pakistan, he trained in London. He's been
in the "business of delivering babies" among other related medical work,
for more than 20 years. Dr. Khan, a true gentleman in every sense of the
word, is truly concerned about his patients and has "bedside manner" that
one only hears about in history books. I mention this only because someone
unrelated may read this someday and may need a good doctor. I believe
it is unanimous that Dr. Khan would be the very first recommendation.
I asked of him ("how many babies have you delivered?"). At first he was
hesitant to answer so I pushed...his reply - well, he says, let's just
say there's fewer nickels in $100,000 than babies he's delivered. As for
me.... I just have to say ("I don't know nuthin 'bout birthin no babies").
Feb 15 4:31 pm Noah wants out and he begins with - The first "PUSH"
- 4:33 pm The second "PUSH" - As "The Cartoon Network plays on TV"
- 4:37 pm Dr. Khan announces "Your'e Ready"
- 4:38 pm We hear from someone "Push Push"
- 4:39 pm Dr. Khan says "easy, we have his head"
- 4:40 pm Dr. Khan calls for suction
- 4:41 pm "He's here"
Feb 15 4:41 pm
As recorded on the records at Memorial Hospital - Noah Jacob Lachance
arrives. Three minutes later, the placenta is delivered and the clean
up begins. Before you know it, Noah is resting comfortably in his mothers’
arms, ready to begin eating. Dawn, almost immediately, offers up the nickname
"Hoover"...let's hope this doesn’t stick.
